Corinne Emma (nee Riebold) Sedlacek of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018. She was born July 9th, 1918, in a rural community of Troy, Illinois, called Blackjack, to John and Claudine (nee Hilby) Riebold where she resided until her marriage to Leo F. Sedlacek. Leo, her parents, and two brothers, John and Paul, predeceased her.

Upon graduating Valedictorian of her high school class, she was awarded a scholarship to the University of Illinois. But, because her father did not believe women needed an education, she started a job in Edwardsville at the ASC office, a company for farmers, and boarded every week at what is now known as the Stephenson House. Coincidentally, it was owned by Leo’s unmarried Aunt Lizzie which Corinne later discovered when she and Leo started dating.

There she met and made three good girlfriends that later with their husbands formed a card club, and the couples then became lifelong friends. Corinne met Leo at a dance which back then was one of the most common forms of entertainment, and eventually they married on November 29, 1941, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Blackjack. Although it was late in the year, they still enjoyed beautiful warm weather in which everyone could still sit outdoors at the farmhouse of the bride’s parents who hosted the reception.

Upon their marriage, Corinne and Leo moved to the farm that Leo’s parents, Martin and Katie (nee Dickmann) Sedlacek owned. There Corinne worked selling eggs, canning, gardening, handling the farm finances and bookkeeping, and all the work that goes with living on a farm while Leo raised livestock and farmed the crops. They had three children, Lee, Lawrence, and Ruthie, six grandchildren, John, Angela, Teresa, Matthew, Natalie, and Spencer, and four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lane, Ian, and Brody.

Through the years, Corinne has enjoyed working the daily Post-Dispatch crossword puzzle, watching Wheel of Fortune, and quilting with her friends at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville where she’s been an active parishioner. And on July 9th, 2018, after being blessed with good health, she celebrated her 100th birthday with a small party at her daughter and son-in-law, Bill Morris’s, home in Glen Carbon where she’s resided for the past ten years. In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon on Monday, November 12, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where visitation will continue on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will be held at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Joseph Havrilka as celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and may be accepted at the funeral home. To send flowers or a remembrance gift to the family of Corinne Sedlacek, please visit our Tribute Store.
