Obituary for David Raymond Hume Phd Rev. David Raymond “Ray” Hume, PhD. , 89, of Louisville passed away peacefully on November 15, 2018.

Born July 20, 1929 near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Charles Frederick and Sallie Perkins Hume, Ray grew up the youngest son in a large family. He developed a lifelong passion for music, languages and spiritual matters. In 1952 , he married the late Dorothy Blandau (Dot) and the couple traveled as evangelistic missionaries to post-war Germany.

On their return, Ray began a 30 year career as a professor of modern languages, first at Kentucky Southern College, and then the University of Louisville. Retiring as Professor Emeritus, Dr. Hume left a legacy: influencing thousands of students; aiding the start of the Sister City relationship between Louisville and Mainz, Germany; developing the German Study Abroad program. During these years, Ray and Dot actively served at St. Matthews Baptist Church.

Ray continued into his last weeks teaching a men’s Bible study class and volunteering in the church library. He never lost his love for music. Whether playing accordion, trombone, piano, composing, or singing with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Ray shared his joy in music.

Known for his sweet smile, quick wit, and critical mind, Ray imparted his wisdom freely to all. He is survived by daughter Ginny (Paul) of Orlando, Florida; by sons David (Judith) of Louisville; Daniel of Frankfort, Ky; Douglas (Jana) of Albemarle, NC; grandchildren Heather (Sean) of Greenwood, SC; Patrick of Louisville; Laura (Dustin) of Fernandina Beach, FL; Hilary (Thomas) of Concord, NC; Scott (Brittany)of Bronson, FL and Katy (Trey)of Guam; Kimi of Louisville; and eight great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Morgan, Adalyn, Hayden, Ethan, Raelyn, Cecilia, and Eliana. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 18 at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 3711 Lexington Rd.

in St. Matthews. A Memorial Service will be held Monday at 1:30 PM at St. Matthews Baptist Church, 3515 Grandview Ave. Internment will follow in Cave Hill Cemetery.
