Donald Hugh Smith 88, of Whiteville died Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was born February 2, 1931 in Halifax County, the son of the late Walter Hugh Smith and Sarah Josie Hargrove Smith. Donald was a 1957 graduate of East Carolina College with a BA in Business, a member of First Presbyterian Church, a tutor for the Columbus County Literacy Council, Lifetime member of the Whiteville Optimist Club, member of the Southeastern Oratorio and the Wilmington Jaycees.

He was an avid fisherman and a lifelong Pirate (ECU). He is survived by his son, Mark McHugh Smith and wife, Kim of Whiteville; granddaughter, Leigh S. Edwards and husband, Chris of Wilmington. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally McKay Smith; his parents; a brother, Theodore Smith.
