She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She is at peace in the house of the Lord.

On November 18, 1936, the late Cleola and William Adams were blessed with a beautiful baby girl who they named Dora, meaning God’s gift. She was raised in Birmingham, Alabama by her mother and stepfather, Charlie G. Lewis. She was always helpful to her mom when caring for her younger siblings.

Dora received her formal education through the Birmingham Public School System, graduating from Ullman High School. She married John Willis Kyles, affectionately known as “Pat/Patrick”. She moved to New York City where she became a licensed beautician, ultimately working for herself.

Dora was also an employee of the New York City Board of Education. She is fondly remembered by students who would often recount the impact she had on their lives. She was a dedicated, hardworking public school system employee until her retirement in 1996.

In her later years, she was a member of the Drew Hamilton Tenants Association, a faithful Tenant Patrol volunteer, an avid traveler, and she had an affinity for numbers. Dora’s 65 year union with “Pat” resulted in two children and one granddaughter, all of whom she showered with love and support.
