DOROTHY JEAN GILMORE SELF, age 87, of Washington CH, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 5:32 a.m. at Court House Manor. She was born on November 25, 1930 in Fayette County to Clinton and Helen Crone Gilmore. She was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School.

Dorothy was employed at Steele Data in Washington CH for several years and then opted to stay at home with her children and tend to her husband’s bookkeeping. She first attended the McNair Presbyterian Church as a young girl and then later became a member at the Gregg Street Church of Christ in Christian Union, now known as, Heritage Memorial Church. Dorothy was one of the original members of the Fayette County Master Gardeners Club, she and Julia Hidy began the campaign to restore the old fountain at Washington Cemetery.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, playing games, and her ultimate passions were God and her family. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and love of her life, Robert “Bob” E. Self, whom she married on September 24, 1948; children, Samuel “Sam” J. Self, and Robert “Bobby” R. Self; infant brother, Claude Leon Gilmore; and several brothers and sisters in-law. Survivors include her children, Stephen (Debbie) Self, Claudia (Barry) Hidy; special niece and second daughter, Loretta Self; grandchildren, Brandon (April) Self, Shane (Shellie) Self, Samantha (Rick) Garrison, Justin (Sarah) Hidy, Lacey (Brock) West, Brett (Paige) Hidy, Jason (Amy) Self, Joshua Self, Patrick Wilson, and J.D. Self; great-grandchildren, Alora, Treston, Thomas, Parker, Payton, Caden, Skyla, Alexa, and Charlie Self; Tayler, Jayden, and Ronin Hidy, Emery West, and Karley and Kendal Garrison; brother, Clinton (Rhoda) Gilmore; daughter-in-law, Cindy Self; and nephews, Greg (Nancy) Gilmore, Gary (Laura) Gilmore, and Larry (Jana) Self.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at The Judy Chapel with Clara Smallwood and Bobby Seymour officiating with burial to follow at the Washington Cemetery. Friends may visit at The Judy Chapel from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Summers Funeral Home.
