Dorothy Louise (Matlock) Edwards, 90, of Magnolia, AR, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 in Carrollton, TX. She was born on October 27, 1928 in Norphlet, AR to the late Robert Andrew and Emma Maggie (Flournoy) Matlock. Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served on the administrative board, was a Sunday school teacher, coordinated between the church and the Methodist Children’s Homes, did the sewing for both parsonages and parlor, and enjoyed donating and arranging roses for many church functions.

She established, organized, and was the director of the Stewpot from 1983 to 2003 serving 350,000 plus meals. Dorothy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Ouachita University and Southern State University. She received a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Henderson State University.

She taught 6th grade at Mt. Holly Public Schools, 4th grade at Magnolia Public Schools, and was a Counselor at five elementary schools between Magnolia, Central, and East Side Schools before retiring. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority.

Dorothy received many awards in her lifetime such as, Community Service Award (one of eight in the state), KARK TV Governor’s Office honor; Methodist Children’s Home Citizen of the Year; Magnolia and Columbia County Chamber of Commerce award; Elder Care Area VII, Hot Springs, AR 1996 recognition; Citizen of the Week of Magnolia, AR; Governor’s Office of Bill Clinton volunteer award; Southern Arkansas Community Service by Mayor Lane Jean and The Heart of Gold Award by Edward Jones and Company. She had several hobbies that included making quilts for her grandchildren Sharon and Bentley, sewing, hand working, tatting, and crocheting. She also loved growing roses and genealogy, researching her mother’s maiden name, Flournoy, all the way back to the 1600’s and her paternal grandmother’s maiden name, Hobby, back to pre-American Revolutionary War.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 46 years Charles Willard Edwards; daughter Sharon Edwards Gibbert; sisters, Helen Adcock and Jocelyn Cameron. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Clerico of Carrollton, TX; granddaughter Sharon Printy of Austin, TX; grandson Bentley Fitch of Frisco, TX; and great grandsons Preston Printy and Skyler Sacks. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Pam Estes officiating.

Burial will follow at the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc. in Magnolia, AR. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Bill Talbot, Jr, Bentley Fitch, Gary Cameron, Danny Welch, Tom Bolding, and Bobby Selah.
