He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 18, 1923. He earned a BA from Butler University, and a MA and PhD from Indiana University.

A World War II Army veteran, Alfred took great pride in his service in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1946 as a Sergeant in Joint Assault Signal Company 295. A lifelong educator, Alfred touched the lives of many. He taught Spanish at Wheaton Community High School (Central) from 1951 to 1987.

He also taught at College of DuPage, Loop Junior College, North Central College, and Illinois Math and Science Academy. Alfred was an avid learner. His curiosity was limitless.

He loved to learn new skills, even taking up wood turning at age 91. The epitome of The Greatest Generation, his hard work and dedication to family and teaching were his focus. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne, daughters Debra (Donald) Ebetsch and Laura Samper, grandchildren Brookes Ebetsch (Drew Sandler) and Graham Ebetsch (Melissa Trella), great grandchildren Sabina and Soren Sandler, and loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, where a memorial service will be held January 19, 2019 at 4:00. Private inurnment and military honors will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Because of his great love of learning and education, the family appreciates memorials directed to his great-grandchildren’s education fund, c/o S. Sandler, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187.
