Velma’s Obituary Velma Ovette King went home peacefully to be with the Lord on February 13, 2019 at Asbury Gardens in North Aurora, Illinois. She was born to Bruce and Clara Bullock on September 25, 1920 in Prentiss, Mississippi, in the home of Charlie and Margaret Burkett. In 1927, at age 7, she was sent to live with her mother and father in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she was the oldest of seven – five brothers and one sister.

Living and working on her parents farm, raising cows, horses, chickens, corn and cotton is just a glimpse of Velma’s beginning life’s experiences. These experiences assisted in forming her character development of having a strong sense of humility, honesty, courageousness, unselfishness, hard work and servitude. At an early age, this along with prayer gave direction to developing her passion for serving the Lord and having a personal relationship with him.

When Velma was only 11 years old, her mother passed on November 30, 1931 after which, she lived with her great Aunt Elizza and Uncle George Smith in Collins Mississippi. Velma met her future husband, Franklin Joseph King and they were married in Mendenhall, Mississippi, December 20, 1941. She gave birth to two children, her daughter Frankie Jean and son Gerald Bruce King in Magee Mississippi.

The family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1955 and their family grew from there. She eventually gave birth to three additional children, her son William, and twin boys Edson and Elton. She loved reading her Bible, cooking, gardening, and singing.

Having worked doing domestic duties, her career was focused until she retired after serving many years in the merchandising industry for Sears Roebuck & Company, located on Archer Avenue in Chicago, Il. Velma was all about family, she was the best mother, wife and grandm’ma she could be. She provided encouragement and support to all she loved and was not ashamed to share her faith and professed belief in the power of prayer.

She attended Saint John Church-Baptist in Chicago for many years, serving in the gospel choir, as well as several mission circles and as a bible teacher. When she and her children moved to the western suburbs she took residence in Warrenville, IL. She joined and worshipped until her health restricted her attendance at Calvary Church, Naperville, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bruce & Clara, her siblings J.D., Ezra Lee, Elmer, Ernest, Bruce Jr., and one sister, Fannie Ruth, her husband Franklin Joseph and her daughter Frankie Jean Wesson. She leaves to cherish her memories, her sons Gerald (Gloria), William (Jacqueline), Edson (Kandi) and Elton (Marva); grandchildren (Susan, Cyrell, Shawn, Edson, Jr., Faith, Elton Jr., & Cameron); great-grandson (Kandon) and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 18, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until the start of a funeral service 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Church, 9s200 Route 59, in Naperville, IL.

Interment will be private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.
