Elwin “Al” Duhm, age 95, of Grand Haven, MI, passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2018. He was born in Sterling, IL on April 27, 1923 to the late Frank and Arlene (Loux) Duhm. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943 and served in the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division during World War II in Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, England and Luxembourg, receiving 2 Purple Hearts.

He married his life-long partner, Betty Lou (Shaffer) in May of 1946. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the University of Iowa. Elwin went on to teach and coach at Rock Falls H.S. in Rock Falls, IL, Lincoln H.S. in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, Wheaton Central H.S. in Wheaton, IL.

He also was assistant basketball coach at Wheaton College. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Harvest Bible Chapel in Grand Haven, MI. Al was an avid golfer and walker, many times walking 1,000 miles in one year.

He loved his sports dearly, especially basketball and soccer and his beloved Cubbies. Thanks to them for letting him see a World Series win. He was an Illinois high school state champion basketball player at Sterling H.S.

He will be remembered as a fun loving person who always liked to throw out a good needle. Most recently he was inducted into the Wheaton High Schools Alumni Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and his brothers Donald Duhm and Kenneth Duhm.

He is survived by his daughter Sandra McAssey of Wheaton, IL, son Allan (Cindy) Duhm of Lakeland, FL, daughter Diane Duhm of Hilliard, OH, son Bill (Cindy) Duhm of Grand Haven, MI, daughter Becky Duhm of Powell, OH, daughter Holly (Tom) Wilson of Wheaton, IL, sister-in-law Maxine Duhm of Bettendorf, IA – along with 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. – until time of memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton, IL. 60187 In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elwin’s name to Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), P.O. Box 894, Jenison, MI 49429-0894.
