Dr. James Edward Hugenberg, age 82 of Bonita Springs, passed away at Inspired Living of Bonita Springs on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Jim was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 5, 1936 to Fred R. and Elisabeth Hugenberg. On July 2, 1960 he married Nancy Elizabeth (Betsy) Briggs, who preceded his death in the year 1993.

He was a Veterinarian graduate of Ohio State in 1963 and practiced in Marietta, Georgia until 1988. Jim was always involved in his three boys’ lives and their many sports and activities. He was a very bright and successful Veterinarian and served as a great role model.

Jim loved playing golf and tennis with family and friends throughout his life. He was a Civil War history buff and really enjoyed watching Westerns. He spent the last 25 years with his long-term companion Gail (Happy) McKernan.

Jim was an excellent husband, father, and friend and he will be missed by everyone. Jim is survived by his children, Todd (Beth) Hugenberg, Keith (Joy) Hugenberg, Adam (Missy) Hugenberg; his granddaughters, Rachel Hugenberg, Elizabeth Hugenberg, Natalie Hugenberg, Alexa Hugenberg; his grandsons, Jake Hugenberg, Ben Hugenberg; his sister, Marti (John) Frey; his brother, Bob Hugenberg; his companion, Gail (Happy) McKernan and her daughters, Kim (Roland) Thomas and Jennifer (Andy) Freeman as well as her granddaughters, Dever, Tara, Ryan, Erin, Katlyn and Jane; great-grandson, Leo; and many other loving friends and family who provided support throughout the years. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and his wife.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 3:00 P.M. at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, 28300 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs, FL 34134. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in memory of James Hugenberg to the Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle N., Fort Myers, FL 33908 or to the Dementia Society of America at dementiasociety.org. Arrangements are being handled by Shikany’s Bonita Funeral Home.
