Obituary for Duane Delano Scharpen Duane D. Scharpen, age 84, of Wanamingo, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the Zumbrota Health Service Center. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 1:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, June 8, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Duane Delano Scharpen was born on October 7, 1933 in Red Wing to Louis and Mamie (Krie) Scharpen. He attended Goodhue schools, until he was needed to work on the family farm.

On July 28, 1953 he married Mary Ann Solberg in Wanamingo. They owned and operated Hader Store for 12 years. Duane also worked construction for Minnesota Farm Buildings and Lodermeiers Implement building farm buildings.

He was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on various boards and he participated many years in the Wanamingo 4th of July parade. Duane was an avid sports fan and never missed a grandchild’s game. Duane also enjoyed watching baseball, playing in local softball leagu es, joking with friends, loved chatting with everyone he met, and spending time with family.

Duane is survived by his daughter, Rita (favorite son-in-law, Allan) Radke of Eden Prairie; son, Brad Scharpen of Cannon Falls; adoring grandchildren, Liza (Chad) Griggs, Jordan Radke, Candi (Derek) Stern, and Jake Scharpen; his amused great-grandchildren, Mason and Paisley, Levi, Trey and Charlie; special friend, Dolly; and countless friends and family members. Duane was preceded in death by his wife and “side kick” of 60 years, Mary Ann; patient parents, Louis and Mamie; and brother, Don Scharpen. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.
