Obituary for Eileen P. Barry Eileen Patricia Barry, better known as Lynn to her family and friends passed on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, New York. Born Wednesday, March 11, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Lillian Barry. Lynn was born and raised in Clara, Offaly County, Ireland and moved with her family to Birmingham, England in her teenage years.
She had an adventurous spirit and a strong desire to travel so at the age of just 17, she secured a position as a nanny and without knowing a single person in the United States moved across the Atlantic Ocean to White Plains, NY. In the early 60’s Lynn married and started her family in Brooklyn, NY where she lived for over forty years until purchasing her current home in Staten Island, New York in the mid 1990’s. Lynn celebrated 39 years of service at TAP Air Portugal retiring at the age of 75 as a Sales Agent in Cargo.
She often joked that she liked boxes better than people! During her time at the company, Lynn moved up through the ranks and truly enjoyed her work, made lifelong friends and had the opportunity to see the world! Although Lynn hated flying she didn’t let that stop her from seeing the world.
She traveled the US and Europe extensively and made frequent trips to her beloved Ireland and England, often multiple times a year, and most recently was finally able to make the trip to New Zealand to visit her baby sister Lillian. Lynn enjoyed gardening no matter how big or small the space. She maintained a full English Garden in her home in Staten Island and in her Brooklyn home, for the US Bicentennial she even created an American flag entirely of blooming flowers.
Knitting and sewing were a favorite pastime and over the years, Lynn made various articles of clothing and accessories for her entire family and her friends and for a time, knitted angora sweaters by request for her colleagues and commuting friends. Lynn enjoyed weekly coffee and cake and card games with The Girls, playing ”May I? ”.
She was known to humorously cut the cake crookedly so she could fix it by re-cutting and eating it! Lynn was a devoted loving mother to John and Samantha and instilled in them a strong sense of family, heritage and tradition. She adored her grandchildren, Joseph, Christopher and John and enjoyed reading and singing her favorite homeland stories and songs with them.
From the time they were babies, they could all be heard singing ”It’s a long way to Tipperary”, ”McNamara’s Band” and sweet lullabies like ”Go to Sleep My Baby”. She was a rebellious woman with an adventurous spirit. Her Strong, no nonsense personality was apparent.
She was an empathetic and loving woman, especially to her family . Lynn loved her family fiercely and was loved in return. Her grandchildren will always know her as Nanny, but she was also a wonderful mother, daughter, sister and friend.
She is survived by her loving daughter Samantha Wiesener . She was an adored grandmother to Joseph Peter, Christopher Noel, and John Michael Giamportone and cherished sister of Frank, Mary, Noel, Marina, Brendan, Paulette and Lillian Barry. She was pre deceased by her parents Francis and Lillian Barry and her son John Francis Wiesener The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
