Obituary for Elaine Sylvia Vieths Elaine S. Vieths, age 91, of Pine Island, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Pine Have Care Center in Pine Island. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 11:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor Wayne Schoch officiating. The visitation will be on Monday, October 22, 2018 from 4:00 -7:00 pm at the Mahn Family Funeral Home – Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Burial will be in the Zumbrota Cemetery. Elaine Sylvia Goplen was born on July 28, 1927 at home in Roscoe Township to Henry and Agnetta “Nettie” (Nelson) Goplen. Growing up on the farm she kept busy with chores, sibling baseball and school until she graduated 8th grade from Roscoe Center School on June 18, 1942.
Elaine remained on the family farm until she met Harlyn Vieths, they married at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota on September 9, 1950. The married couple bought a farm in Roscoe Township after the wedding where they raised livestock and crops. In 1961 they welcomed Jim into their home, raised him and farmed with him until they retired.
Though farming was the center of the family, Elaine maintained 400+ chickens and had a local egg delivery route to many neighbors where she enjoyed socializing and having coffee each week. She was active in Goodhue County Home Extension Group and the local neighborhood card clubs and later birthday club. Though retired, Elaine remained on the farm until 2016 and kept up with her granddaughters and the happenings on the farm.
She enjoyed baking, sewing and made the best scalloped corn and potatoes. Elaine is survived by her son, Jim (Pennie) Goplen on Pine Island; three granddaughters, Mandi (Glen Fredrickson) Goplen, Kim Goplen, Becky (Reggie) Brogan; great-granddaughter, Shannon; two sisters, Doris Borgschatz of Kasson, and Ruby Miller of Pine Island; two brothers, Harris (Donna) Goplen of Albert Lea, and Joe (Marcia) Goplen of Zumbrota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harlyn Vieths; and her parents.
