Obituary for Elizabeth Ann Shaw (Adkins) Elizabeth Ann Adkins Shaw, age 59, of Washington Township, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018. She was at peace at home with her family and friends by her side. Elizabeth missed her opportunity to be a smoker, as her cause of death was lung cancer even though she never smoked a day in her life.
She courageously fought her disease for three years and lived life to the fullest to the very end. Elizabeth was born September 24, 1958, in Columbus, Ohio, at White Cross Hospital (now Riverside Hospital) to Thelma “Tommy” Jean Anderson Adkins and John Thomas Adkins Jr. Elizabeth and her family lived in Columbus, Chillicothe, and Lynchburg, Virginia, before finally settling in Bellbrook where she graduated high school in 1976. She studied medical lab technology at Kettering College of Medical Arts and University of Dayton.
There she met her husband Jeff, who was determined to get to know that beautiful, quiet young woman who sat so studiously in the front of their classes. Jeff eventually convinced Elizabeth to go out with him. When Elizabeth nursed Jeff to health after a serious car accident, it was apparent they were meant to be.
They married August 14, 1982, at Bellbrook Community Church. They lived in Columbus, where they had their first child, and Jeff graduated medical school in 1985. Elizabeth and Jeff eventually settled in Washington Township where they raised their five boys.
Besides wrangling her children, Elizabeth was a talented musician–clarinet, oboe, piano, and voice–and artist. She was an avid nature lover and particularly adored birds. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents John Thomas Adkins Jr. and Thelma “Tommy” Jean Anderson Adkins Haupt, stepfather Eugene Haupt, and grandparents Harold and Gladys Anderson and John and Eva Adkins.
Elizabeth was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend of those she left behind. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey B. Shaw, son Joshua (Kristen) Shaw and grandson Franklin, son Zachary (Kasey) Shaw and grandsons Carter and Logan, son Alexander (Karen) Shaw, son Benjamin Shaw (Erin), and son Reece Shaw (Emily), brother John (Analee) Adkins and their daughter Colleen, stepsisters Kathleen Katsch, Linda Hanks, and Marjean Pitts, uncle Robert (Donna) of Kent, WA, and aunt Reda Rhea of Knoxville, TN, and innumerable cousins. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at noon on Saturday, July 21, at Christ’s Church, 3370 Upper Bellbrook Road, Bellbrook, Ohio.
Elizabeth’s family and friends thank Drs. Gordon, Cass, Stedje, and their staff for their care. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elizabeth’s honor may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Dayton, or the Kettering Medical Center Foundation.
