Elmer Anderson Holland, son of Sara Rebecca Brown and Jacob Anderson was born in Philadelphia, Pa on April 22, 1921. As the eldest of five children and the only son, Elmer learned early in life the importance and necessity of hard work. A child of the depression, he worked at many jobs to help support his Mother and sisters.

Raised in Delaware City, he shined shoes and polished uniform brass for soldiers at Fort Delaware, worked on a shad fishing boat – developing his life long version to both shad and water- and picked vegetables in the fields. He attended Howard High school and worked for several employers as a laborer before he entered the Army during World War II. He served in Europe until the end of the war returning to Delaware City in 1946.

He met Amanda Emory before the war in Delaware City, where she was visiting her cousins and promised to marry her when he returned. On June 21, 1946, they married and he joined her family in Claymont where he lived for 60 years. Elmer and Amanda had two children.

Elmer, Jr. and Gertrude. (Midge). Elmer was extremely proud when he went to work at the DuPont Edgemoor plant in 1953.

His DuPont brothers were very important to him and he enjoyed the company picnics and July 4th celebrations spent with them and their families. Elmer was also proud to have been 3rd degree Mason. Elmer cherished the time spent with his church family at Community Presbyterian, where he and his wife were members for many years.

His wife of 59 years, Amanda and his sisters Elizabeth, Hazel and Rose preceded Elmer in death. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Elmer and Midge Holland; his grandchildren, Mark and David Holland , his sister, Wilma Cox and many loving nieces and nephews, especially Robert and Charles Emory, who are also part of his Church Family, and Brenda Berrien who was another daughter to him.
