Emma Jean Landis MSN, 82, of Tunkhannock, PA died Saturday, November 10, 2018 at her son’s home in Croghan NY. Jean was born in Harleysville, PA. of the late Ellis and Edna Good Mack.

She married Ray Laverne Landis on June 10, 1958. She was a member of Towamencin Mennonite Church, Harleysville and First Baptist Church of Factoryville. She received a BSN degree from Eastern Mennonite University in 1962 and a Masters in Nursing Administration from College Misericordia in 1990.

She became a registered nurse in 1957. Her nursing career was diverse and included; teaching obstetrics, working in pediatrics, surgery and podiatry, educating and caring for women and children in Jamaica, serving on several Native American reservations and founding and operating Tunkhannock Adult Day Care. She was also pivotal in the day to day operations of her husband’s medical practice.

In addition to “seeing the need, and finding a way to fill it” through her nursing career, Jean enjoyed her family and friends, traveling, and birding. During her retirement, she knitted over 1000 hats for Samaritan’s Purse and MCC, and pieced over 440 quilts and comforters for MCC. Throughout her life, she had a knack for making the impossible possible.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ray Laverne Landis, M.D.; a daughter, Konnie Landis, M.D.; a son, Kenton Landis; sisters, Edna Yoder and Mary Loux, and brother, Paul Mack. She is survived by her daughters Karen (Tim) Alderfer of Athens, PA, and Kathy (Miles Reimer) Landis of Newton KS; son Kenneth (Rosetta) Landis of Croghan, NY; a son-in-law, William Sutherland of Seattle, WA; two sisters, Esther Delp of Lansdale, and Hannah (Joe) Lapp of Harrisonburg, VA. She has seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on December 1st, from 1-3pm at First Baptist Church of Factoryville, PA. A Celebration of Jean’s life will begin at 4pm at First Baptist Church. Interment will be a private family service at Plains Mennonite Church, Hatfield PA.
