Born on October 14, 1914, in the small town of Camden, Alabama, God gave his most treasured gift of life to Emma Belle Hicks. Though the Lord bestowed upon her His greatest creation, He came for His daughter on December 20, 2018.
She was the loving daughter of Morris Hicks and Pearlie May Gullett. Her mother passed while she was in the 3rd grade. Her father then removed her from school so that she could work and help support her siblings by picking cotton in the fields.
At the tender age of 18, she married the love of her life, Jodie Martin, and had two daughters, Minnie and Rose. Emma lived through The Depression, this country’s wars abroad and it’s struggles domestically. She moved to New York City in 1942, taught herself to read by reading the Bible and found work as a seamstress.
After retiring as a seamstress, she took a job working for Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Elaina Trainello. While working for the Trainellos, Emma helped raise their 4 children and travelled with them to many different places throughout the world. Emma Belle Martin was a very proud, strong and independent woman.
She never asked for help from anyone other than God, but she would always go out of her way to help others. Emma had her aches and pains, but she did not complain. She had an unwavering faith in God throughout her life and believed that He had and would continue to carry her through difficult times and struggles.
She survived both breast and ovarian cancer. She raised (2) daughters, (7) grandchildren and (4) great-grandchildren. She made it her priority to instill spiritual faith in her family and made sure that they all had an opportunity to receive a good education.
She was the matriarch of her family and always advised self-reliance, financial security and most of all, her wisdom. Her door and heart were always open to those who needed her. She was the wind beneath our wings.
Emma was an impassioned and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother with unconditional love for her family. She was an excellent cook, who enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She loved to sew and made blankets, dresses, suits, pants, hats, spreads, etc.
She would give them as gifts to family and friends. She liked watching wrestling and going to church. An avid traveler, Emma was always well-dressed and enjoyed going out with friends in her younger years.
