Ernest Arthur Wenkel passed away at home on August 31, 2018 with his family by his side. He was born September 19, 1932 to Fred and Caroline (Krause) Wenkel on the family farm west of Standish. Ernie grew up and lived on the farm all his life.

He attended Bethlehem Lutheran School until the 7th grade. He finished his education at Standish High School. On November 9, 1952, he married Barbara Ann Gulvas at St. John’s The Baptist Catholic Church in Standish.

He farmed his entire life. He… Read More » was a member of Michigan Milk Producers Association for 50 years as well as being a member of the Gibson Township Fire Department. He was an avid hunter and loved being with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara. He is also survived by his sons Gerald (Celia Young) Wenkel, Daniel (Lyn Meihls) Wenkel, as well as his daughters Caroline (Dan) Goick and Mary Beth (Russell) Bechtel. He is further survived by his grandchildren Carie (Scott) Knochel, Holly (Jeff) Schneider, Geralyn Wenkel, Lacey (Kirk) Adams, Beth (Jake) Knochel, Brooke Robinson, Heather Robinson, Brian Wenkel, Justin (Autumn) Bechtel, Cody Bechtel, Jeremy Phipps, and Chris (Brook Campbell) Young.

He is survived by 13 great-grandchildren. Ernest is survived by one sister Eileen Partlo of Bay City, and one brother Harold Robert (Annabelle Hilyard) Wenkel of Sterling. He is lastly survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ernest is predeceased by three sisters: Velinda Boetefuer, Esther Eland and Doris Wenkel. He is further predeceased by two brothers: Hersel Wenkel and Clarence Wenkel and in-laws Carl Partlo and Leo (Shirley) Gulvas. The family would like to thank his personal staff for their dedication over the past two years–too many to name but all wonderful, caring people.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Heartland Hospice, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be Thursday, September 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Lee Ramsay Funeral-STANDISH CHAPEL, Standish, Michigan with Pastor Matthew Dent officiating. The family will greet family and friends from 2:00 pm till 8:00 pm Wednesday, September 5, 2018 and from 10:00 am till time of service on Thursday.

Interment will be in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Michigan.
