Gene was born in Waitsfield on July 29th, 1924 and was one of seven children of Harold and Floy (Bettis) Joslin. Gene spent his childhood in Waitsfield and graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1942.

He then attended “Aggie” school in Randolph where he started to learn the Vermont dairy business. Following graduation in 1943 he was hired to work on the Brigham Jersey farm in northern Vermont. Following this work, Gene became the milk tester in Chittenden county where he developed an appreciation for the qualities of the Jersey cow.

On October 16, 1948 he married Edith Gaylord also of Waitsfield and they lived in South Burlington. In the early 1950s he became the farm manager of Dr. Eastman’s Jersey farm located in Apple Tree Point on Lake Champlain. In 1953 Gene and Edith moved to Montpelier where they purchased their own farm the Edgemont Jersey Farm located on Upper Terrace Street in Montpelier.

In 1958, Gene earned the distinction of Vermont’s outstanding Young Farmer. Gene was an active member of the Vermont Jersey Cattle Club and rose to be the president of this association. The Edgemont Farm, located only a mile from downtown Montpelier, was well known for being the location of the annual Vermont College sugar on snow party where as many as 400 attended.

Gene and Edith and their three children lived on the farm until 1971 when they moved into a new home that Gene built in Middle. Gene became the Middle town clerk in the early 1970s and continued for nearly 13 years in that capacity. At his home in Middle he enjoyed vegetable gardening and operated a small “100 bucket” family sugar operation visited often by friends and neighbors.

Gene loved the outdoors and appreciated hunting and fishing. Over the years he made trips to Alaska, Colorado, Canada, and Labrador. Gene learned to play golf and this became a passion.

He was a member of Blush Hill and he was proud of a hole in one ball shot on a course in Florida. Gene was the consummate “do-it-yourselfer” and always had a project underway in his workshop. He built a small sailboat, and motorboat, and furniture items to name a few.

He always preferred repairing an item over tossing it. Gene projected himself as a tough and sometimes gruff Vermonter. Beneath the outside package was an honest man with integrity who possessed a great sense of humor.

Gene lost his loving wife Edith in 2011. He cared for her in her last days in their own home in Middle. Gene is survived by a sister Janet Perry of Springfield, Mass; three children, Randall Joslin of Lynn Haven Florida, Judith Grich of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Sandra Joslin of Hanover, New Hampshire; five grand-children and four great grand-children and many nieces and nephews.

He will be missed by his family and neighbors. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Guare & Sons/Barber & Lanier funeral home, 30 School Street in Montpelier. A burial will follow later in the spring at the Waitsfield Commons Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Four Seasons Care Home on 135 South Main Street Northfield, Vermont, 05663. For those wishing to convey online condolences to the family, please visit www. guareandsons.com.
