Hermes, Jr., age 87, Hankinson, ND, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at St. Gerard’s Community of Care in Hankinson. Funeral Mass will be Friday, October 26, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson with Father Scott Sautner officiating. Music will be provided by organist Mary Ellen Krump and the St. Philip’s Choir.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Hankinson. Pallbearers will be Frank’s grandsons: Justin and Travis Reiland, Frank Hermes IV, Jacob Hermes, Patrick Veit, and Andrew Johnson. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Visitation will continue Friday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Francis James Hermes, Jr., was born to Francis C. and Mary Ann (Minnehan) Hermes on December 17, 1930, in Breckenridge, MN. He grew up on a farm near Fairmount and attended school in Fairmount, graduating from Fairmount High School in 1949.

On January 14, 1949, Frank entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea as a cryptographer. He was honorably discharged June 19, 1952, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He earned the Occupation Medal (Japan) and the Korean Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars for his service.

It was then Frank met Dorothy Kinn, and they married on November 4, 1954. It was a lifelong love affair for them, a marriage of 63 years. Dorothy passed away August 17, 2018.

Frank loved working outdoors and spent most of his adult life operating heavy equipment for various companies. There were a few years he worked in the United States Postal Service, but eventually he returned to the outdoors. He retired after a long career.

Frank left to be with Dorothy once more on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. Survivors include his children, Cindy (Dean) Reiland of Mantador, ND, Jim (Lisa) Hermes of Kindred, Sheila Hermes (Dan Friago) of Lindstrom, MN, Francis III “Joe” (Tami) Hermes of Hankinson, Jeanne Veit of Hankinson, and Matt (Josie) Hermes of Anchorage, AK; his grandchildren, Cody (Sarah) Reiland, Travis Reiland, Justin (Leslie) Reiland, Gabrielle (Chris) Kimpel, Anastacia Hermes, Jacob Hermes, Andrew (Meghan) Johnson, Katie Johnson, Francis IV “Frank” Hermes, Alison Hermes, William Hermes, Dorothy Hermes, Patrick Veit, Nick Veit, Tony Veit, Roslyn Hermes, and Matt Hermes, Jr.; ten great-grandchildren, Bailey and Gavin Reiland, Raina, Vanna, Baya, and Charlie Reiland, Hudson and Elsie Reiland, Jack Kimpel and Brynn Johnson; sisters-in-law, Edna Hermes, Wynema Bommersbach, and Linda Kinn. He is also remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; brothers, Gabriel, Claire, and Raphael; sisters, Eulalie (Lee) Hafner, Anne Jeanne Hedmark, Rhoda Holm, Leora Herding and Leola Whitaker; and 3 infant siblings.
