Gary Scott Smith January 14, 1954 – February 07, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Gary Scott Smith, 65, of Charlottesville, Va. died on February 7, 2019 peacefully at his home after a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Born January 14, 1954 in Charlottesville, he was the son of Harry Jackson Smith II and Doris Marshall Smith.

He was preceded in death by his mother Doris Marshall Smith, his brother Harry Jackson Smith III and his son in law William Ernest Lee Hall. Gary was a lifelong resident of Charlottesville and graduated from Lane High School in 1973. He was a talented athlete and was awarded MVP on the Lane Football team his senior year.

He was a Master Electrician and self employed most of his career. He enjoyed bringing new life to old houses and renovated multiple homes in Belmont in the early 80s. He was an active member at Belmont Baptist Church in the 80s-90s working with their youth groups and starting a bus program to help community members get to church.

He was a dedicated father, coached soccer and basketball and never missed a swim meet or a tennis match. He had an eclectic mix of interests including riding his Harley Davidson, lamp making, ballroom dancing, Monday Night Dinner, volunteering with The Falcon Club and riding four wheelers with his grandchildren. His grandchildren and nephew were the light of his life and nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with them.

He is survived by his father, Harry Jackson Smith II of Charlottesville; daughter, Courtney Smith Hall and grandchildren Scout, William and Jackson of Scottsville; daughter, Alexandra Smith Payne, husband Eric and grandchildren London, Sydney and Cavan of Charlottesville; sister, Sharon Smith Lloyd of Charlottesville; brother, Robert Jeffery Smith and wife Mary and nephew Tobin of Forest, Va. A special thanks to the nursing staff at Martha Jefferson Hospital for the excellent care he received there and to Terry Dean’s Blue Light Ballroom for the many years of dancing and friendships. Visitation will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Home from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019.

A funeral will be held at Hill and Wood at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 with Pastor Chris Atwell officiating. Interment will follow at Monticello Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Falcon Club of Charlottesville, Va.
