Harold Linwood Long February 28, 1926 – March 22, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Harold Linwood “Red” Long, 93, of Sandy Point, formerly of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2019. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on February 28, 1926, the son of the late Charles Linwood Long and Maggie Humphrey Long. Also predeceasing him are his wife, Joyce Watkins Long; and his daughter, Linda Long Twyman.

He is survived by his son, Harold Randolph Long and his wife Linda; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Long Abercrombie and her husband Joel and Shannon Long Childs and her husband Bubba; one grandson, Willie Thomas; one great-grandson, Tucker Abercrombie; two great-granddaughters, Lacey and Hailey Childs, all of Warsaw, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Prestipino and her husband Joe and Kathleen Preitz, of Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. Red graduated from McIntire High School in 1947. He proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Grady and the U.S.S. McCaffery.

He was an active member of the American Legion for many years, where he held many offices, including that of Commander. He was a charter member and deacon of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church, and also a member of the Elks. He retired from the United States Postal Service.

Red loved being with his family. He enjoyed the time he spent in Sandy Point, boating, fishing, riding in his golf cart, and spending time with his cat Bootsie. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the nursing staff of Riverside-Tappahannock Hospital for taking such wonderful care of Pop.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Broadus Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Wheeler and Mr. Walker Gaulding officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at Hill & Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville.
