Maudie Karen Wright October 28, 1955 – February 26, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook With a perfectly coiffed hairdo, a wholehearted smile, and unparalleled optimism that would outshine the cheeriest of folk, the world was honored by the presence of Maudie Karen Wright. Known to some as Maudie Karen “Tresemme Twister” Todd, she could sling a set of clippers faster than a rainstorm flooding a draw, taking out split ends with the cool-headedness of Doc Holliday at the O.K. Corral. She was the reigning matriarch of both Tangles salon and her vast expanse of extended family, most significantly her immediate progeny Jeffrey Michael, Paul Benjamin, Jennifer Lynn, their spouses, and a half dozen wild and wonderful grandchildren.

Born in the sandy pine-strewn flats of North Carolina on October 28, 1955, from a tender young age, the desire to travel and experience myriad aspects of humanity consumed her. She called many places home, from the misty chill of California, the lush jungles of Venezuela, the frigid tundra of Michigan, to the sweltering southern reaches of Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, and finally beautiful Virginia. She was a woman of discerning tastes; cable cars and Ghirardelli chocolate, Broadway and the Rockettes, Michael Buble and mornings spent gleefully devising intricate oceanic adventures in the hot tub with an Irish coffee smothered in extra creamy Reddi-Whip (the blue can, never the red… because it wasn’t quite creamy enough!

) In her fleeting struggle with cancer that ended February 26, 2019, Karen never allowed her spirits to founder. Each day, she would deck herself out in full finery and face each treatment with daring enthusiasm. Not even a chemo treatment could keep her from meticulously applying makeup, pearls, and a delicate spritzing of Paloma Picasso.

A Celebration of Life is to be held on May 4, 2019, from 4:30 p.m. at Reserve Charlottesville, a lovely event space on the Downtown Mall. The family has decided Derby Day to be most fitting for a shindig, as Karen loved the races, so come decked out in your finest Derby Day attire and have a horse in mind. In lieu of flowers, please come bearing a story to share about our beloved Karen, and stay to help spread the joy of her life.
