Alan Steven Kane May 31, 1930 – March 23, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Alan Steven Kane died in his home at the Colonnades in Charlottesville, Va. on March 23, 2019, surrounded by his loving wife of 62 years, Bess, his daughter Jennifer and several devoted companions. He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Kane, his mother Bernice Kane, and his brother-in-law Richard Latter, dear friend and co-owner of Kane Furniture.

Alan was born and raised in New York on May 21, 1930. He attended Washington & Lee University and graduated from the University of Miami. A proud Eagle Scout, he later entered the US Army as an infantryman serving in Ft.

Smith, Ark. He and Bess met on a blind date in Greensboro and moved to Roanoke, Va. where Kane Furniture had its inception, later locating in Charlottesville for over 60 years as an established family-run business.

Alan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend, businessman, lifelong learner, avid reader, golfer, gardener, hiker, UVA sports fan, and civic volunteer. As an adult he pursued an associate degree in computer science, creating his own software programs for his business. He donated countless hours as a math tutor for students, building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and delivering meals for Meals on Wheels as recently as 2017.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Alan is survived by his son, Nelson Jon Kane (Randi Kashnig); his grandchildren Adam, Daniel and Sarah Wiener; his sister Ruth Latter, his nephews Kirby Eliot and Gordon Latter (Dori Hoffman Latter); and other extended family. A graveside funeral is planned for 3:00pm Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Hebrew Cemetery in Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Alan can be made at Meals on Wheels at 704 Rose Hill Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22903 or to The Parkinson’s Foundation at 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131.
