George David Smith, age 74, of Linwood passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. A native of Old Fort, he was a son of the late Earl and Blanche Robinson Smith. George was born on April 27, 1943.

In 1962, George entered into military service in the United States Army. He served two combat tours in Vietnam during his distinguished military career, and his awards included: two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star Medal with “V” device, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with “V” device, Vietnam Service Medal with four battle stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Following his retirement from the Army, George returned to NC and made a home in Linwood.

There he raised his son, David, of whom he was tremendously proud and loved more than life itself. George was a loving father, brother, and son. Surviving, in addition to his son David Smith (Lauren) of Raleigh, are five sisters, Frances Griffin of Charlotte, Mary Jane Walker of Old Fort, Nancy Smith of Prescott, AZ, Margaret Smith of Charlotte, and Kathy Lamb (Mike) of Old Fort, as well as three brothers, Earl Smith (Lynda) of Concord, Tom Smith of Marion, and Johnny Smith of Beaufort, SC.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Salem Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Chaplain Richard Anderson officiating. Memorials may be made to www. operationhomefront.org.
