Marjorie Ruth Carver McEntire, 90, passed away on Friday, April 20th, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills in Forest City, NC. She was born on February 5th, 1928 in Flat Creek north of Asheville, NC, to Melvin Grady Carver and Della Vestire Smith. “Margie” spent much of her childhood in Marion, NC.

She was an excellent student and well read. Her passion for literature, vocabulary, and word play led to her being called ‘the walking dictionary’ during her academic years. Her inquisitive mind about property and homes culminated in her passing the real estate license exam which she never formally used but fully exercised as a hobby.

She worked in the Register of Deeds Office in McDowell County for over 30 years finishing out her career as Registrar before retiring. She took great pride in serving the public and lived by the golden rule professionally and privately. Margie married Marvin Millard McEntire on July 21st, 1951.

They were happily married for over 64 years at the time of his passing. Marvin served in the Masonic Lodge of Old Fort while Margie was a faithful and active member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, macrame when in vogue, writing, wild flowers, gardening, and basketball from the sidelines where she vigorously coached and refereed as a spectator and fan of both her sons.

Of utmost importance was her steadfast relationship to her church First Baptist of Old Fort where she attended most of her life. She was passionate about singing alto in the choir. Margie is survived by her sons Richard Alan McEntire of Walker Town Road, Old Fort; Melvin Bryant McEntire and wife Lucy Woods McEntire of Hong Kong, China; a half-brother Bill Carver of Springdale, AR; a half-sister, Bobbie Lee Kinney of Fort Worth, TX; Arlene Sowers the “daughter she never had” of Marion; step daughter Sheila Perry of Annapolis, MD; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one great grandson affectionately known to her by the pet name “Little Marvin”.

In addition she is survived by great nieces Lori R. Cornelius and Amanda Carter accompanied by Leighanne Harris, one nephew and many other relatives. Margie was preceded in death by her husband Marvin Millard McEntire; parents Melvin Grady Carver and Della Vestire Smith; brothers James, Andy, and Melvin; sisters Mickey and Ruby; and half-brother Joe Carver of Arden, NC. A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church Old Fort on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Burial will follow the funeral at Cherry Springs Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society at tinyurl.com/y833h6uw or the charity of choice in her honor.
