Glenn Middleton , February 24, 1925 — June 15, 2018

Glenn Robert Middleton, 93, of Champaign, died Friday, 15 June of natural causes. Glenn passed away with the blessed assurance of God’s abiding love. Glenn leaves behind his beloved wife of 72 years, Lois V. (nee Woodbeck).

Both graduated Danville High School. He was born 24th February, 1925 and married Lois on July 18, 1946. Their children Mark L. Middleton (Paula Massey) of Champaign and Marcia Middleton-Kaplan (Richard) of Walla Walla, WA, and a brother Verne mourn his departure.

Five grandchildren survive: Christopher and Philip (Megan) Middleton; Julie (Kyle Grove), Nicholas, and Amy Balazs. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and a soon-to-be-born great-grandchild also survive. Glenn followed his ancestors’ path to build, preserve, and defend the nation since their migration from Denbighshire, Wales to Virginia Colony in the 17th century.

As part of “The Greatest Generation,” he served in Finschafen, New Guinea, with Company C, 692nd Engineer Battalion, a unit which “by outstanding performance upheld the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and the Corps of Engineers”. Glenn’s grandchildren commemorate his service at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a plaza brick that simply says: “We Love You G’Pa”. As a skilled journeyman carpenter with training in civil engineering, Glenn worked high-rise construction alongside fellow union tradespeople leaving the skyline of Chicago as their labors’ shared legacy.

In later career years, he served fellow veterans doing carpentry and maintenance at the Hines V.A. hospital in Maywood, Illinois. Returning to Champaign in retirement, Glenn enjoyed duplicate bridge in the American Contract Bridge League, chess, reading, and sports on TV. He relished life in the outdoors as a motorcyclist, swimmer, hiker, and tent camper.

Family and friends remember him as a peaceful and positive person and will miss his presence. Glenn’s parents, Laverne and Lillian (Davis) Middleton, his brother Martin Middleton, and two grandsons, Mark David and John Andrew, preceded him in death. The family is pending memorial celebration until a later date.
