Gregoire G. LaCount “The AxMan”, 58, of Petoskey, died October 22, 2018. Greg was born on January 4, 1960 in Petoskey, the son of Kenneth LaCount and Geneva (Groves) Young. He attended St. Francis and Petoskey High School and graduated in the class of 1978.
In his early years, Greg owned a palm tree trimming company, “Sunbelt”, in Arizona for 10 years. On September 14, 1996, he married Michele Portman at the Stutsmanville Chapel in Harbor Springs. Greg worked as a butcher at the Harbor Springs IGA and as a General Manager for Tigineli’s Restaurant.
He also worked for Matelski Lumber for many years as a logger and later owned his own business and became widely known as “The AxMan”. Greg enjoyed fishing, hunting, berry picking and mushrooming. The 4th of July was his absolute favorite holiday and he looked forward to shooting fireworks off the breakwall every year.
More than anything, Greg will be remembered for his generous and caring nature. He would often use his experience with landscaping and tree trimming to help those most in need. Greg would help the elderly, recently widowed and those who could not pay him without expecting anything in return.
He will be deeply missed. Greg is survived by his wife, Michele LaCount of Petoskey; his children, Chrissy Yuhn, Jen Yuhn, Nikki LaCount, Liz (Ric) Rice, John Murner, Michelle LaCount all of Petoskey and Michael LaCount of Alanson; his grandchildren, Nikeyia Cadwell, Joshua Cadwell, Christopher Cadwell, Sophia Stein, Sean Stein, Maverick LaCount, Abbie Ferella, Madison Ferella, Andrew Chef, Avery Hanel, Alivia Rice and Annika Rice; his mother, Geneva Young; siblings, Ron (Royko) LaCount, John (Debbie) LaCount, Cherie (Jerry) Kalchik, Annette LaCount, Diana Potts, Ken (Lena) Young, Ray Young, Cathy (Jim) VanTreese, Penny (Joe) Sterly, Jeannie (Herman) Cease, and Barb Cross; as well as his beloved and deeply spoiled dogs, Nicky and Buddy; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth LaCount; step father, Paul Young; siblings, Michael, Mary and Leo; and brother-in-laws, Peter LeQuia and Duane Cross.
There will be a visitation at Stone Funeral Home, Wednesday, October 24 from 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will take place again on Thursday, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Petoskey, from 9:30 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Father Dennis Stilwell will officiate.
