Gregory’s Obituary Gregory Allen Shawver was born on April 18, 1950, in Valhalla, Westchester County, NY, where his father was a nursing student and his mother was a RN in the medical surgical ward. He spent his youngest days in a Levittown house on Long Island, NY. His father was in the Army Nurse Corps and Greg spent his youth growing up in Japan, the Presidio, San Francisco, CA, and the Upper Bronx where he attended De Witt Clinton HS.

He enlisted in the Army in 1967, and served as a helicopter mechanic and crew chief in Vietnam. He was awarded a Purple Heart after surviving several helicopter crashes in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1970.

After serving he attended American University in Killeen, Texas, and received a degree in business aviation. Mr. Shawver flew helicopters for various companies including Petroleum, Evergreen and Bell Helicopter in Iran. He also worked as a DJ for KISS-FM in San Antonio and ran the midnight movie at the Broadway Theater in Alamo Heights.

He then worked for AT&T as a helicopter pilot in Shreveport, LA, where he met his future wife Mary Riggs. They moved to Ft. Meyers, FL, and were married in December 1993.

In 1994, he and Mary moved to the San Antonio, TX, area where they remained until 2018 when they moved to a new home in Harker Heights. Gregory passed away peacefully on February 22, 2019. He was preceded in death by his father Leslie Elbert Shawver and brother Jeffery Charles Shawver.

He is survived by his wife Mary Riggs Shawver of Harker Heights TX, mother Elsie June Shawver of San Antonio, TX, nephew Cody Shawver of Austin, TX, aunt Carol Stewart of Takoma Park, MD, and cousins Martha Netoff, Laura Wallace and Matthew Stewart and faithful companion Mel, a yellow lab. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, at Southern Funeral Home, from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Zion Cemetery with Rev.
