Obituary for Harry John Bloomer Sr. Harry John Bloomer Sr., a longtime resident of Hastings-on-Hudson, died Saturday, November 3, at Calvary Hospital after a short illness. He was 92 years old. Born on July 11, 1926, in Yonkers, New York, he was the son of the late Josephine (Schmidt) and William Bloomer.

He moved to Hastings-on-Hudson at a young age and attended Hastings High School. He was united in marriage to Audrey Maund on May 6, 1944, at St. Matthew R.C. Church in Hastings-on-Hudson. They were married for 69 years, until her passing on July 11, 2013.

Mr. Bloomer worked for Westchester Hills Cemetery and Riolo’s Meat Market before beginning a 30-year career as a police officer with the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department. He served with distinction — first as a patrolman and later as a detective. As a patrolman, he was a member of the Police Pistol Team, which won awards throughout Westchester County.

He retired in 1987. He was a member of the Hastings-on-Hudson PBA, of which he served for a time as president. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Mathew R.C. Church, where he was a former daily communicant.

Mr. Bloomer is survived by his three children: David and Mrs. Mary Ellen (William) Ballantine, both of Hastings-on-Hudson; and Robert (Jean) of San Antonio, Texas. Also surviving are his sister, Mrs. May Cusack of Dobbs Ferry, and his sister-in-law Ms. Vera Maria Guimaraes of Nova Friburgo, Brazil. In addition, he is survived by his 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 21 nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Mr. Bloomer was predeceased by his son, Harry J. Bloomer Jr., in 2003, and four brothers and sisters. Arrangements are being handled by the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry. A wake will be held on Tuesday, November 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, November 7, at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew R.C. Church, Hastings-on-Hudson.
