Obituary for Irene Salotti Thompson (Sutherland) Mrs. Mescal Irene Sutherland Salotti Thompson, age 100, of the New Garden Road section of Honaker, Virginia passed away Thursday (July 19, 2018) at Maple Grove Healthcare in Lebanon, Virginia. Born March 29, 1918 in Russell County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Holland and Inez Honaker Sutherland. She had been a resident of Russell County most of her life and was a member of the New Garden Primitive Baptist Church.
She was a graduate of Honaker High School and had been employed as a cashier and butcher at Matt’s Market in Honaker and as a seamstress at Lebanon Apparel. One of her greatest talents was painting, she enjoyed oil painting, but was most widely known for her China painting which she had been doing since the early 1980s. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Ernest Salotti; husband, Norman Thompson; brothers, Craig Sutherland, Leland Sutherland Paul Raymond Sutherland and Boyd Sutherland; sisters Rebecca Ruth Mullins and Faye Drunnan; one daughter, Marguerite Faye Warren and step-son, Norman Thompson, Jr. Survivors include two children, Phyllis McClelland of Texas and Ernest “Ernie” Salotti and wife, Patti of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Leona Finch; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Elder George Ben Combs and Elder Ked Stacy officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutherland Cemetery on New Garden Road, Honaker, Virginia. Pallbearers will be David Warren, Hunter Johnson, Hayden Johnson, Joe Salotti and Thomas Warren.
