J. Thomas Schomisch, Sr., age 82, of Appleton, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018. Tom was born in Oshkosh on January 30, 1936, to the late Norman and Cecil (Hall) Schomisch. He attended St. Peter high school in Oshkosh and participated in ROTC.

After attending Purdue for 2 years, Tom came home to finish his BA degree at UW-Oshkosh in 1959. He was married to Shirley (Byrd) Schomisch from 1959 to 1982 and had 6 children: Mary Hall, Sarah (Tom) Janz, John (Shellie), Paul (deceased), Joe (Amy) and Dave (Heather). He enjoyed helping others in his business of insurance and investments.

Tom was an active member of St. Mary parish and participated on the church board and the board of St. Vincent DePaul. Tom sailed in college and had a love for boating. He was a long-term member of the Appleton Yacht Club.

He enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Emmalee Gruthoff-Schomisch, his children, and his step children David (Christine), Collin and Brian Gruthoff. Tom is also survived by his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norm and Jim, sister Mary Lou (Baumbach) and son Paul. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 5th at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 S. State St., Appleton, with Father William Swichtenberg officiating. Friends may visit the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
