Obituary for James Kenneth “Jim” Ricketts Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to all, passed away suddenly on June 16, 2018 in McCaysville, GA. Funeral Services will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, June 20 at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Macland Chapel in Powder Springs. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 19 from 5 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joyce Ricketts of Powder Springs; son: Shannon Ricketts (Karen) of Kennesaw, GA, daughter: Jana Ricketts Venus (Robert) of Denver, CO; grandsons: David Ricketts, Adam Ricketts and granddaughter: Jolie Venus. He was born on April 30, 1942 in Baltimore, MD. He grew up in Knoxville, TN graduating from Halls High School in 1960.
He married the love of his life, Joyce right after high school and together they moved to Atlanta. He attended Southern Technical College in Marietta, GA. He worked for 29 years for Sears Robuck & Co, then owned and operated JKR Maintenance both in Atlanta until his retirement in 2012.
Jim was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Powder Springs. He enjoyed playing many sports and served as a coach and mentor for hundreds of young people. In later years he cherished the time spent with his three grandchildren traveling with them on many family vacations, teaching his grandsons how to drive, and teaching and playing new games with his granddaughter.
Jim and Joyce divided their time between their home in Powder Springs and their mountain cabin in McCaysville. They relished the friendships made in their close-knit community of cabin neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Elizabeth Ricketts; sisters, Terry Ricketts, Patricia Beeler, and niece Brandy Carroll.
Jim was a genuine friend to everyone who knew him, and nothing made him happier than helping and taking care of others. He loved God and lived by the Golden Rule. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Jim’s memory to Calvary Children’s Home, 1430 Lost Mountain Road, Powder Springs, GA 30127.
