Mr. James “Leroy” Mitchell, age 80, of West Marion, NC, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Deer Park Health & Rehab. A native of McDowell County, he was born on October 18, 1937 to the late Pinkney Mitchell and Beulah Phillips Mitchell. Leroy was retired from Drexel where he worked in the cabinet department.

His wife Carolyn Finley Mitchell of 32 years preceded him in death. Leroy was a very avid fisherman, who also loved to watch boxing, wrestling, and westerns. But most of all he enjoyed sitting on his porch.

Leroy was a volunteer Fire Fighter, but will most of all be remembered for as the loving father and grandfather that he was. He leaves behind four children, a son David Mitchell of Marion, son Roger Mitchell and wife Vanessa of Marion, a daughter Tammy Creson and husband Richard of Marion, and daughter Paula Miller and husband Shane of Nebo; two sisters, Helen Camp of Gastonia, and Kathy Camp and husband James Ziros of Gastonia; six grandchildren, Mattney Mitchell and wife Amanda, Rhyan Mitchell, Devin Ray and wife Rachel, Daniel “DJ” Creson, Dillon Creson, and Chole Miller; and three great grandchildren, Lucas Mitchell, Landon Mitchell, and Lilliana “Lilly” Ray. A service of remembrance and celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home of Marion with Pastor Kevin Arrowood officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family would ask you to make memorials for Leroy’s grandson Devin Ray who is battling cancer. Donations may be made at his Gofundme page, www.
