Mrs. Mildred Wyatt Ownbey, age 84, of Old Fort, passed away Monday, November 26, 2018 at her home in Old Fort. Mildred was born in Yancey County on August 10, 1934, the daughter of the late John W. and Nora Thomas Wyatt. She was retired from Janesville Products.

Her interests were many and included camping, just being outdoors, and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She had a strong will and she stood resolute for the things she believed in and was not afraid to express her opinion, a trait that she was well respected for. Being with her family and beloved canine companion Bandit brought her the greatest pleasure.

She was loved by many and will be missed by all who had the honor to know this special lady. Her husband of 28 years, Fred Ownbey, preceded her in death. Mildred leaves behind a large loving family which includes her seven children, Harold Wilson and wife Debbie of Black Mountain, Revonda Calloway and husband Raeford of Swannanoa, Danny Wilson and wife Rosetta of Old Fort, Debbie Allison and husband Scott (“Sceet”) of Old Fort, Tommy Ownbey and wife Melissa of Old Fort, Freddie Ownbey and wife Cindy of Old Fort, Kim Ogle and husband Heath of Old Fort; two brothers, Perk Wyatt and wife Helen of Old Fort and Jim Wyatt and wife Jamie of Florida; sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren (with one on the way), and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Service in Old Fort with Rev. Heath Ogle officiating. The family will be available to receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the services in the McGinnis Family Cemetery in Old Fort.
