Vernon “Lynn” Helms, age 60, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 19, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. Born in McDowell County on October 11, 1958, Lynn was the son of the late Tom Helms and step-mother Jeroline Helms Hall. Lynn worked at the North Carolina Department of Corrections.

He was the 1977 McDowell High State Champion in wrestling in the 122lbs weight class and was Athlete of the year for Western North Carolina and McDowell High. Lynn also was inducted into the first McDowell High Athlete Hall of Fame. He enjoyed fishing, gem mining, and civil war reenactment.

Lynn’s two grandchildren always took priority over his other interests. He will be remembered for his love and care for his family and was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Lynn is preceded in death by his sister Angie Helms, brother Terry Helms, and step-brother J.C. Huffman.

Lynn leaves behind, in addition to his step-mother, his wife of 40 years, Sandra Cox Helms; a daughter, Windy Lynn Helms of Marion; two sisters, Debbie Burgin and husband Ronnie of Nebo and Judy Petty of Marion; and two grandchildren, Cameron Helms and Adrian Goins. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home of Marion. The funeral service will be held following the visitation with Revs.

Jerry McClain and Donald Justice officiating. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Murphy’s Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice McDowell at 575 Airport Rd, Marion, NC 28752.
