James R. “Pat” Watson July 14, 1931 – February 24, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Funeral services for James R. “Pat” Watson, 87, of Zavalla will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Pastor Matthew Gentry officiating. Interment will follow in the Largent Cemetery. Pat was born July 14, 1931 in Trinity County, Texas to the late William H. “Buddy” Watson and Sarah (Parks) Watson.
He was one of 10 siblings and spent his days taking care of his family. He met Georgia in 1954 at the Massey Business College in Lufkin. He passed away at his residence in the Black Forest Community near Zavalla.
He was a loving husband, “Daddy”, “Paw-Paw Pat”, “Pops”, brother, cousin and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, and watching his favorite sports on TV. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1954 in Germany.
He worked for Lufkin Industries for 41 years. He was a fishing guide for 25 years at Piney Point Lodge on Sam Rayburn Lake. He loved fishing the Big Bass Classic where he showcased his unbelievable fishing skills.
His love for the outdoors, yardwork, and gardening kept him going until the Lord called him home Sunday, February 24, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Georgia (Moses) Watson; daughters, Karen Walker and husband Kent, Connie Wright, Marilyn Shoemaker and husband Danny, all from Lufkin; son, James “Henny” Watson and wife Belinda of Broaddus; grandchildren, Kimberly and Matthew Gentry of Bryan, Krystle and Bradley Horneffer of Greenville, South Carolina, Kourtney and Blake Ponson of Lufkin, Mandy Wright of Crestview, Florida, Randy Wright of Lufkin, Bobby Dean Watson of Huntington, Eric and Sandra Mott of San Antonio, and April and Matthew Crager of Houston; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Kaitlyn and Ryan Gentry of Bryan and Emily Horneffer of Greenville, South Carolina; sisters, Nelda Battenfield and husband Ed of New Caney, Dorothy Childers of Emory, Mary Brasuell and husband Coy of Lufkin, Wilma Williams and husband Roger, Carolyn Spears, and Debbie Reid, all of Lufkin; brother, Jerry Mike Watson of Lufkin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. “Buddy” Watson and Sarah (Parks) Watson; brothers, Bob Watson and wife Cozetta and Joe Ed Watson and wife Mamie; brothers-in-law, Royce Childers and Mike Reid; aunt, Dogie Lacey; and best friend and fishing buddy, Mike Barrington.
Pallbearers will be Kent Walker, Randy Wright, James H. Watson, Matthew Gentry, Blake Ponson, Bradley Horneffer, Bobby Dean Watson, and Eric Mott. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Nick, J.C. McClain, Stephen Gentry and Ryan Gentry. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sid Roberts and staff at Temple Cancer Center, the staff at Hospice in the Pines, Dr. Manda at The Heart Institute, and Dr. Robin Schlaudt of Charles Wilson VA Clinic who provided more than just comfort.
