Interment will follow in Pollok Cemetery. Mildred “Milly” Cheatham Masters, a resident of the Trinity Oaks Assisted Living Facility in Pearland, Texas, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019.
Milly was born in Pollok, Texas on January 5, 1925 to the late Charles Dixson Cheatham and the late Ettie White Cheatham. At a young age, Milly’s family relocated to Grapeland, Texas. At Grapeland High School, she played the violin in the orchestra and served as the editor for the school newspaper and yearbook.
There she met the class treasurer, Norbert “Bert” Masters, whom she eventually was to marry. Milly graduated from Grapeland High School in 1941. Pursuing a higher education, she attended Sam Houston State University.
She participated in an accelerated program, receiving an Education degree in 1944 at the young age of 19. Milly accepted a teaching position in Pasadena, Texas as a second-grade teacher in the first year of the newly-built Garden’s Elementary. She continued to teach second grade at various Pasadena elementary schools and retired after 32 years.
After completing his two-year tour of duty in the Navy on the hospital ship, Mercy, Bert and Milly married on September 6, 1945. Their 60-year marriage bore them two sons, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Milly is predeceased by both her mother and father, her husband Bert Masters, and her son David Masters.
Also, her brother, Charles Cheatham and her sister, Delma Williams. She will be remembered by her devoted, remaining immediate family: daughter-in-law, Donna Anders Masters (late husband David Charles); son, Mark Steven (wife Anita Smith Masters); grandchildren, Rebekah Noel White (husband Jeff White), Ryan Matthew Masters (wife Nichole), Jeremy Christian Masters (wife Erika), and Jennifer Christine Mathis (husband Joshua Mathis); great grandchildren, Brandon Lee White (wife Madison), Ireland Noel White, and Makeda Kandace Masters. Fondly known as the matriarch of the family, “Aunt Milly” will be forever loved by her brother-in-law and so many nieces and nephews.
There were all so dear to her but too numerous to name. There were those with whom she had a special relationship and they held a special place in her heart (and you know who you are). Milly lived and died by her own terms with her own faith.
A very strong, determined and respected woman; she had done all she wanted to do and loved everyone she wanted to love. She was ready to take her ‘sentimental journey’ and she did it her way! You will be lovingly remembered, always!
Pallbearers will be Buster Masters, Jeremy Masters, Ryan Masters, Josh Mathis, Jeff White and Brandon White. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon just prior to the funeral service. Memories and condolences may be added at www.
