Obituary of James Buchala Hawkinsville- James E. Buchala, 79, husband of Joan, passed away peacefully at this home on March 30, 2018. Affectionately known as Jim, he was born on August 22, 1938, a son of Edward and Sarah Quinn Buchala and grew up in Hawkinsville, receiving his education at Boonville Central School. In 1955, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Airforce, receiving his high school diploma from the Territory of Hawaii.

Mr. Buchala served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring and receiving his Honorable Discharge with rank of Master Sergeant in 1977. During his years of service in the Air Force, Jim served his country in Viet Nam, during the Viet Nam War. After retiring from the Air Force, for two years, Mr. Buchala was employed on the oil rigs off the coast of Louisiana, before returning to New York and employment at Griffiss Air Base in the Runway Maintenance Department.

Later for a period of six years, he was employed as a police officer for the Capitol Police at the State Capitol Building in Albany. His last employment for twenty years was for the New York State Department of Corrections, as a Correctional Officer at the Oneida Correctional Facility, Rome, retiring in 2002. Jim was a member of Charles J. Love Post 406, American Legion and Harland J. Hennessey Post VFW, both of Boonville.

He greatly enjoyed and loved his canine friends, “Zephyr Lilly” and “Bonnie Blue” and his African gray parrot, “Sassy”. He enjoyed giving rides to his grandchildren on his John Deer mower tractor and wagon. Jim also enjoyed gardening and “hittin a few balls” on the golf course.

On April 7, 1990, Jim was united in marriage with Joan Redner, in Boonville. In addition to Joan, his wife of 28 years, Jim is survived by his children, LeRoy Redner, Heather Redner Mathis and husband, Dion; grandchildren; Dr. Michael Redner, Jonathan Redner, James “J.D.” Redner, Mitchell Redner, Dora Redner, Emillee Mathis and Levi Mathis; great grandchildren, Aiden Redner, Aiden Dant, James M. Redner, II and Emmett Backer. Jim was predeceased by his parents and siblings; Robert (Bobby) Buchala, Suzanne Dietz and Michael (Mickey) Buchala, a son James (Jimmy) Redner and a grandson, Cody M. Seymour.

Also surviving are two nephews, Michael and Jonathan Buchala, Long Island, a niece, Sarah Dietz Reichelt, PA; Sister in law, Pat Buchala, Long Isalnd, brother in law, Marlyn Dietz, PA, brother in law and sister in law, Wayne and Mary Ernst, Lyons Falls, Kathy and Tom Lisowski, Hawkinsville, three great nieces and three great nephews. His Funeral will be Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. at Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler St. where members of Charles J. Love Post # 406, American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and Tun Tavern Marine Corps League will call in a group, followed by funeral services, where Pastor Lynn Lockwood, will officiate. Interment with military rites will be held later this spring in Boonville Cemetery.
