Jean B. Payne, 89, of Bristol, Virginia died Friday, February 1, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Abingdon, Virginia on March 10, 1929, a daughter of the late David Freeman Bower and Annie Oakley Brown Bower Lowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Sol” C. Payne; and step-father, William R. Lowe.
Jean was a resident of Bristol for many years. She was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She was retired from Wallace Elementary School where she was the secretary in the cafeteria and also drove a bus.
She was a life time member of Shakesville Church of Christ, Bristol, VA. She was a homemaker and she loved quilting and sewing. Jean is survived by one daughter, Donna Weddle of Bristol, VA; one son, Charles David Payne and wife, Susie of Bristol, VA; one granddaughter, Tammy Nash Hagy and husband, Bruce of Abingdon, VA; two grandsons, Mark Nash and wife, Pat of Bristol, VA and David Todd Nash of Bristol, VA; four great grandchildren, Jesse Cody and husband, Will of Gulf Breeze, FL, Meagan Hagy of Abingdon, VA, Emily Nash Taylor and husband, Dustin of Knoxville, TN and Tyler Nash of Bristol, TN and his fiancé, MacKenzie Barr; two great-great grandchildren, Jedison and Veda Cody; lifelong friends, Nancy Wolfe, Edna Campbell, LaWanda Booher and Shirley Gay Moulse, who was like a sister.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Caris Healthcare and the doctors, nurses and staff on the 3rd floor east at BRMC for all the love and care shown to Jean during her illness. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2019 at Blevins Funeral & Cremation Services, 417 Lee Street, Bristol, VA 24201. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 4, 2019, at Blevins Funeral & Cremation Services, with Roger Phelps, Minister and Bill ton officiating.
The committal service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2019 in Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, VA. Honorary Pallbearers will be Glen Brown, Keith Thompson, John Payne, Greg Moulse, Charles Hunter Brown, and Preston Brown. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m., Tuesday.
