Mrs. Joan Hogan Vess, age 78, of Old Fort, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in Asheville. Joan was born in McDowell County on November 21, 1939 to the late Guy Hogan and Ethel Lanning Hogan. She was retired from Baxter Healthcare where she worked for many years.

Those who knew her will remember her zest for life and her self-effacing demeanor. She was well-known for always having a pound cake to share and no grandchild ever went home without an ice cream float. She enjoyed lunches and shopping with her sisters and friends.

She was a faithful member of Old Fort First Baptist Church and quietly served many by taking them to appointments and providing meals. Joan is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ray Vess; three daughters, Tracy Walker and husband Gary of Marion; Terri Fisher and husband Matt of St. Petersburg, Russia, and Toni Hetzel and husband Rick of Decatur, GA; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Cory, Timothy, Cassidy, Jonathan, Hogan, Hannah, and Rae; and numerous nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance and celebration of her life will take place Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Old Fort First Baptist Church with Rev.

Drew Dalton officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Community Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated, however, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in her memory are encouraged to consider Old Fort First Baptist Church at 203 E. Main Street, Old Fort, NC 28762.
