Obituary for Johanne V. Wood WOOD, Johanne V. – 84, of Cape May passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Sunday, September 30, 2018. Born in the Bronx, NY, Johanne graduated from Evander Childs High School and thereafter embarked on a long and successful career with the New York Telephone Co. where she began her employment as a cable and plug operator and with grace and flare earned her way into the Pioneer Office on West Street in Manhattan, holding the position of Administrator for many years before retiring in 1985. While working within the Pioneer Office she was instrumental in organizing social events and activities for their long-term employees and retirees alike.

In the 1970s she and her husband, Norm built their retirement home in Cape May where they enjoyed living for many years. Johanne was always very social and eager to volunteer within the Cape May Community. She was a member of the Cape May Kiwanis Club, the Nature Center, the Red Hat Ladies Society of Cape May, Cape May Garden Club and spent many years volunteering at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital.

Johanne enjoyed playing tennis, golfing, animals of all sorts but especially her Havanese, Lily Belle. She also enjoyed being around children and, of course, spending time with her dear and close friends. Johanne was also known to make very frequent treks to the Dry Dock in Cape May for hot fudge sundaes.

She is predeceased by her husband, Norman Edward Wood (2011); her sister, MaryJane Gisselbrecht; brother-in-law, George Gisselbrecht, and two step sons, John and James Wood. Johanne will be dearly missed and forever loved by her family which includes her niece, Julienne Rice Tamsen; nephew, Mark Gisselbrecht (and Vera Toth); grandnephew, Matthew Rice; 4 step children, Thomas (and Jeanie) Wood, Luanne Caswell, Linda Tilli and Suellen (and Patricia) Sager; 14 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; step nieces, Patricia, Ellen, Barbara and Jeanette; nephews, cousins and extended family members. There will be a viewing on Wednesday (Oct.

3rd) in the Spilker Funeral Home, 815 Washington Street, Cape May from 4pm – 6pm. An additional viewing will be offered on Thursday (Oct. 4th) in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 525 Washington St., Cape May from 12:30pm until 1:30pm with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 1:30pm.

Entombment will take place on Friday (Oct. 5th) in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Cape May Kiwanis Club, PO Box 124, Cape May, NJ 08204.
