Obituary for John Dennis Jr. John H. Dennis, Jr., 72, died after a brief illness on Monday, June 4, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 718 Jackson Street in Thibodaux. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service.

A reception will be held in the parish hall after the service. He was a native of Hodge, Louisiana and a resident of Thibodaux. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Murray Dennis, his children Elisabeth Meade Adams and her husband James, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, John Chandler Dennis of Monticello Arkansas, Brian Stewart Dennis and his his wife Heather of Lawrence, Kansas and two grandchildren John Wylston Dennis of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Olivia Penn Adams of Mechanicsville, Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Kathryn Dennis of Hodge, Louisiana and a sister, Mary Kathryn Montgomery of Overton, Texas. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana State University (University of Louisiana at Monroe) with a degree in history and continued his education at the University of Georgia where he received a MA and a PhD in history. He taught at Clemson University before accepting a faculty position at Nicholls State University.

During his 34 years at Nicholls State, he received the NSU Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence. He worked with the Nicholls State ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) and the United States Military Academy at West Point to design a class on military history for the university. He also served several terms on the faculty senate and served as a board member of the Louisiana Historical Association.

Additionally he was a member of and faculty advisor for Phi Alpha Theta, honorary history fraternity. He was active in several community organizations, including Thibodaux High School Band Booster Club, Thibodaux Area Habitat for Humanity and St. John’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
