Van Deventer III died of heart failure January 16th, 2019 at his home near Purcellville. He was eighty-seven years old. He is survived by his wife, Ann Van Deventer, his three children Matt, Elizabeth, and David Van Deventer, and sisters, Beatrice Aselton and Virginia Powers.

He is predeceased by his son, John H. “Jack” Van Deventer IV and his sister, Isabelle Rebecca. John was born in Yonkers, New York, September 4th, 1931 to John H. Van Deventer II and Beatrice Barry Van Deventer. In 1950, he received an ROTC scholarship to Rensselaer Polytech and then transferred to Northwestern University, graduating with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering.

He then served as a lieutenant in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier off the coast of Europe from 1954-1957. In 1958, while living in Manhattan, N.Y., he met Ann Hutcheson, a member of the Purcell family and native of Loudoun County. They married in 1959 and then in 1968, settled on a farm outside of Purcellville where they raised their four children.

John spent his adult career as a technical writer working in Washington D.C. He also wrote fiction in his spare time. He was an avid reader and unbeatable chess player.

He loved the opera, good food and lively political debates. He gave generously to many charities. His family is grateful for the sacrifices he made commuting long hours into the city so they could live in the countryside of western Loudoun.

He will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be held at Hall Funeral Home in Purcellville on Monday, January 21, 2019, visitation from 1-2 p.m. services at 2 p.m. burial will follow in the Ketoctin Cemetery.
