Lucy Tom Eppes Harper September 07, 1922 – February 06, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Lucy Tom Eppes Harper, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania on February 6, 2019 surrounded by her children. Lucy was born in 1922 at the Shelburne Glebe near Leesburg, Virginia to Charles Gibson Eppes and Sallie Joe McGehee Eppes. Lucy graduated from Lincoln High School in 1939 and went on to earn her Associates Degree in education from Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA.
After teaching fifth grade locally for a year, she worked in payroll at a Jacksonville, FL hospital, ultimately moving back to Washington, DC where she held a position at the Pentagon. On her 23rd birthday, she took the train to Philadelphia where she was charged with establishing the Government War Assets Office. She also served as a trust officer for Industrial Valley Bank and Bryn Mawr Trust.
From 1947-1969, Lucy was married to Philip Dunston Holman, Jr. of Philadelphia. They raised their family in Drexel Hill, PA. In 1971, Lucy was reunited with the love of her life, Robert Lewis Harper, of Leesburg, VA.
The two were married in 1978, and lived in Jackson Hole, WY and Bellefontaine, OH before settling in Saint Petersburg, FL. Mr. Harper died in 1986, and Lucy remained in Saint Petersburg until 2017, where she was honored for her many years as a volunteer patient advocate for the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill, a position to which she was appointed by the Governor of Florida. Lucy was independent, intelligent, feisty, generous, and admired for her common sense, quick wit, and great sense of humor.
She will be dearly missed. She was predeceased by her siblings Jane Petrie Eppes Brunner, Mary Joe Eppes Hicks, Frank Gibson Eppes, and Sally Charles Eppes Workman; her sister-in-law Margaret Alice Pancoast Eppes; her niece Sally George Brunner; and son-in-law Joseph W. Kauffman. Lucy is survived by her three children, Nancy Holman Kauffman, Elizabeth Holman Campbell, and Philip Dunston Holman, III; Grandchildren: Joseph Kauffman (Shayna), Steven Kauffman (Katie), Laura Kovacs (Brian), Carrie Rydesky (Ted), Lisbeth Valvo (Jared), Bonnie Campbell, and Brynne Campbell.
Great-grandchildren: Jackson, Lucy, Marcy, Jake, Teddy, Aaron, Samuel, and Ryan. Lucy was passionate about feeding the hungry. Donations to the charity of your choice in her honor would be greatly appreciated.
Visitation: Hall Funeral Home 140 S. Nursery Ave. , Purcellville, VA 20132 at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 16, 2019, followed by burial at Union Cemetery, Leesburg, VA.
