Struthers – John “Jack” W. Sturm, 72, of Struthers, formerly of Lowellville, died peacefully Thursday morning, January 17, 2019 at The Inn at Walker Mill surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Sturm was born January 27, 1946 in Youngstown, a son of Raymond and Jean Thomas Sturm. A 1964 graduate of Lowellville High School, Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in the Vietnam War for 18 months.

After being honorably discharged, Jack returned to the area and was a member of Local #87 plumbers and pipefitters before employment at General Motors treatment facility where he retired in 2008 after 29 years of employment. Jack was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville and the Struthers VFW Post #3538. Jack volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen and Our Community Kitchen and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

He enjoyed gardening, canning peppers, and watching the Browns, Indians and the Buckeyes. Jack was known for his warm smile and quick wit, especially with Laina and her cooking. He would always say with that grin, “little more practice, Laina”.

Most important to Jack was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, loyal brother and brother-in-law and especially was one proud papa. He cherished his time with family enjoying all the family gatherings.

He leaves his wife, the former Mildred “Laina” Barone, whom he married August 29, 1970; two daughters, Jacqueline Sturm of Struthers and Angela (Brian) Medvec of New Springfield; two sons, William Sturm of Struthers and Joseph (Lisa) Sturm of Lowellville; eight grandchildren, Clayton, Kylie, Sophia and Ella Medvec, Antonio, Lucia, Malena and Mateo Sturm; three sisters, Judith (Walter) Avdey of Lowellville, Margaret Necastro of Stuart, FL, Eileen (Don) Necastro of Austintown; one brother, Raymond “Buck” (Michele) Sturm of Atlanta, GA; two brothers-in-law Tom Grist of Madison, OH and Febe Perry of Fl; as well as a very large extended family who loved him dearly. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanne Perry and Suzanne Grist. Jack’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation for Dr. Patrick and Dr. Jhee and their staff at Louis Stokes VA Hospital, Amanda and her caring staff at the Inn at Walker Mill and the caring staff of Ohio Living Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Jack.

Friends will be received Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Lowellville. A Prayer Service will be held Tuesday, 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church with Fr. John Jerek officiating.
