John Patrick Downey January 10, 2019 John patrick “Pat” Downey, of Pearl River, LA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 10, 2019, at his home surrounded by his wife and loved ones praying over him. He was born on January 18, 1943 in Vicksburg, MS to the late George Byrne Downey and Mary Elizabeth Jones Downey. Pat was married to his beloved high school sweetheart Cathy Barnes, for 55 1/2 years.

Pat was blessed with 4 daughters Susan Downey Bell (Skeeter), Lynn Downey, Karen Downey Smith, and Janet Downey; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Margaret Thomascine Downey Peterson of Crystal Springs, MS, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Devoted to his faith, Pat was a member of Sts.

Peter and Paul Parish since August 1971. He was called to ministry and ordained a Deacon on December 18, 1999, serving Southeast Louisiana Hospital and Sts. Peter and Paul.

He strongly believed in education and was a lifelong educator and mentor. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School (Vicksburg, MS), Hinds Junior College, Mississippi State University, McNeese State University, and Southeastern Louisiana University. He served as a teacher, coach and administrator for 35 years at St. Aloysius High School (1965-67), Slidell High School (1967-69), Fairview High School (1969-71), Pearl River High School (1971-79), and Pearl River Junior High School (1979-2000).

He enjoyed spending time with his family (for the most part), friends, and former students, attending church functions, teaching (lecturing) everyone around him, and watching/supporting his Mississippi State Bulldogs (Go Dawgs! ) and the New Orleans Saints. Funeral services will be held at STS.

PETER AND PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, 66192 St. Mary Drive, Pearl River, LA on Monday, January 14, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. Interment in CRAWFORD CEMETERY, SPUR 41, PEARL RIVER, LA. Visitation on Sunday evening (following the Saints playoff game) from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. with Rosary at 6:30 P.M. and on Monday after 9:00 A.M. until funeral time. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to Sts.
