John S. Mentzer, 82 BOARDMAN – John S. Mentzer, 82, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, with his loving family by his side. John was born Sept.

30, 1936, in Youngstown, the son of John and Elizabeth (Lieberman) Mentzer, and was a lifelong area resident. John served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1956. He then went on to employment with Commercial Shearing in the press metal division, retiring on July 1, 1999, after 42 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, the former Cindy Shaffer, whom he married May 16, 1959; three sons, Jim (Sally) Mentzer, Jeff (Janine) Mentzer and John W. Mentzer; a grandson, Jeffrey Mentzer Jr.; and great-grandchildren Rebecca, Jordan, Samantha, Alyssa and Ty. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Ida Daniels and Betty Lou Zuzan. Per John’s request, there were no services or calling hours held.

Arrangements were entrusted to the professional care of the Thompson-Filicky Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Youngstown.
