Mr. John Wayne Kersey, 74, of Swainsboro passed away Friday, July 20, 2018 at Emanuel Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Kersey was born October 10, 1943 in Swainsboro, Ga. to the late Watson W. Kersey and Vonelle Flanders Kersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Nanilu Douglas Kersey; brother, Miles Kersey; step-brother, David N. “Jabo” Wilson. Mr. Kersey graduated in 1961 from Swainsboro High School and was a member of the Army National Guard from July 1964- March 1970 and then was a member of the Georgia National Guard Reserve. He was employed by Independent Life Insurance Company as an agent for years.

Mr. Kersey then worked for American General Life Insurance Company until his retirement. After retirement he continued to sell insurance with Liberty Bankers. He enjoyed bird and deer hunting, but his passion was fishing.

He would rather be in a river not catching anything than sitting at home. Mr. Kersey was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patsy H. Kersey of Swainsboro; daughter, Tara K. Newsome of Swainsboro; son, Ryan Kersey (Karen) of Swainsboro; brother, Doyle Kersey (Fay) of Kite; grandchildren, Carrie Newsome, John Kersey, and Katelyn Kersey; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Funeral Services will be at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2018 with Elder Craig Lanier and Rev. Rusty Moore officiating. Mr. Kersey will lie in state one hour prior to service.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2018 at Chapman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Wesley McRae, Mark Wilson, Steve Wilson, Adam Kersey, Mickey Flanders, John Kersey, Trojan Harrison, and Doug Bennett.

Honorary Pallbearers are members of American General Life Insurance Company, Walt Donald, and Wayne Scarboro. Memorials may be made to New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund 671 Nunez-Lexsy Rd. Swainsboro, Ga.
