Taft – Johnny Vara, Jr. passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019 with his loving family at his side. He was 56. Johnny was born on May 29, 1962 to Francisca (Escobedo) and Juan T. Vara.

He was a resident of Taft, Texas most of his life, and most recently a resident of Corpus Christi. He was currently employed by Bay LTD as a Safety Manager. Johnny was a veteran of the US Air Force where he was a Medic and MP.

Johnny reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was a loving and caring husband, father, son, uncle and friend. Johnny will be missed by all who knew him.

Preceding in death are his parents, Juan and Francisca Vara and granddaughter, Erawyn Jizelle Galindo. Survivors include his wife: Mary Vara of Taft, Texas; sons: Joshua Lee Vara of San Antonio, Texas; JoAdrian M. Vara (Leslie) of Taft, Texas; Bart Ortiz, Jr.; Robert Ortiz; Nicholas Vara, all of Corpus Christi, Texas; Michael Ortiz of Portland, Texas; daughter: Kimberly Garza (Leo) of Gregory, Texas; Jonnica Vara of San Antonio, Texas; and Faith Perez of Portland, Texas; 21 grandchildren; brother: Marty Vara of Taft, Texas; sisters: Maria T. Malloy (Jim) of Ingleside, Texas; Mary Ann Vara Gonzalez (Victor) of Taft, Texas; in-laws: Reymundo and Celia Castillo of Portland, Texas; Guadalupe Diaz (Doris Garcia) of Alice, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be begin Thursday, January 24, 2019, 4:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Church, 120 E. Escobedo in Taft, Texas.

A Holy Rosary will be held the same evening, 7:00 PM at the church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, January 25, 2019, 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church in Taft with Father Pat Donohoe as celebrant and Father Pete Stanley as con-celebrant. Burial will follow, 1:00 PM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi, Texas.
